Ancillary task: Digi Pack
This was the template for our digipak:
Below is the initial ideas for our digipak, the group decided to meet up round Olly's have and discuss the images we wanted to include in the music video. From discussing certain images, we put together a basic digipak of the images we had selected that may look good for the digipak. The image on the far left of the digipak shows a behind shot of James walking into the house, we liked this shot as at this part in the music video, the audience we hope is very interested in where the artist is going. We felt that this image would look good as the opening cover for the inside of the digipak. For the top middle image we included this as we felt it was a shot that showed the artist in a big space, as a group we decided this would be a perfect image for the CD panel. For the front of the digipak we thought about the image on the top right, this showed James in a central position with his body language suggesting authority and superiority, we thought this would look good as with James being in the hanger he came across as ‘cool’ hopefully influencing the audience to pick up and buy the special edition single. The three panels at the bottom were to go in the inside of the digipak, however we were not sure on the image to the right as this was a large image that covered two panels, also it wasn’t symmetrical so we were not sure whether it would look particularly right.
After
a second discussion with the group we finalised ideas for our final digipak.
For the Front cover we decided to go with an image of James in a centre
position in front of a plane, we used the same text from the music video and
included ‘Childish Gambino’ and name of the song ‘Heart Beat’ This was
essential as this is what the audience would visually see when going to buy the
product. We needed it to be edgy powerful and professional looking front cover to
appeal to our target audience. We felt that from having the plane behind James
it shows him with money and power, everything a typical popular artist should
have, we felt it developed the typical conventions a rap/pop music artist it
should have. On the front cover a parental advisory content logo is shown in
the bottom left hand corner, this advices that anyone under the age of 18
should have parental consent to watch the video as there is some explicit
language within the video. On the back cover of the digipak we decided to use a
shot from the previous initial ideas digipak, we felt this would be better as a
back cover as James has his head down and we felt that the front cover needed a
shot of James looking into the camera, giving the impression he’s addressing
the audience. On this back cover we included a bar code to make the digipak
look as realistic as possible, this was and the parental logo on the front
cover were the only two items copy righted from Google, apart from this
everything else on the digipak was created using our own images. The back cover
also consists of the artists name and title of the song. We also added in our
names into to show who was involved in the making of the special edition
single. The far right image on the top of the digipak says ‘I’m ready ready to
go’ this is a quotation from the single, we used this for the opening cover of
the inside of the digipak. The idea we wanted to get across to the audience was
that Childish Gambino is ready to go to the #1 chart single. The grey
background behind these lyrics shows a faint heart, again emphasising the
singles title and theme, ‘Heart Beat’. For the inside panels we decided to go
with two similar images of James either side of a plane rapping, we agreed as a
group that this looked good as it gave off a symmetrical appearance to the inside
which we felt looked really current and smart. We used an image from the
previous digipak as the disk panel, likewise to the previous comment about the
image we felt it was good as the planes are shaped round James in a circle,
which again leave James in a centre position.
